A Song That Will Last

Hello Church Music Today!  I am absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Dennis and hopefully provide some encouragement, insight, and help to those who serve faithfully in the music ministry of the local church.  I want you to know up front that I am a sinner desperately in need of God’s grace.  I was an enemy of God who was made His friend by the blood of Jesus Christ.  I don’t claim to have attained anything or have any knowledge that is not a product of God’s grace.  Therefore, I thought it would be fitting for my first post to be a song of praise and thanksgiving.  Today’s song is “Jesus Thank You” by Pat Sczebel (click the link to hear it via YouTube).  Here is an excerpt of the chorus…

Your blood has washed away my sin / Jesus thank You

The Father’s wrath completely satisfied / Jesus thank You

Once Your enemy now seated at Your table / Jesus thank You

To my knowledge, the song first appeared on the Worship God Live album by Sovereign Grace Ministries (circa 2005).  Since we started doing this song a few years ago it has quickly became one of our congregation’s favorites.   I can’t tell you how many times these lyrics have been brought up in sermons and passing conversations.  I believe this is a great song for any congregation’s repertoire and it has at least 3 major things going for it.

  1. It clearly and accurately declares the Gospel in song.  We always need the Gospel.  Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection are foundational to Christian worship.
  2. It allows the congregation to respond to the Gospel with their voices.  It is important to sing the facts of the Gospel but it is also imperative that we give our people ample opportunity to respond to it in praise and thanksgiving.
  3. It has a singable tune and can easily be sung with varying instrumentation.  I have led it with piano accompaniment only and I have also used the whole band.  Also, the bridge is easily omitted if you are in a more traditional setting.
