Song of the Month: Your Great Name

This Sunday, I will be introducing a new song to our congregation as part of our “Song of the Month series.”  I have decided to pick one song per month for our congregation to get really acquainted with.   Sure, we will do more than one new song in the month but this is a way for our people to get to know the meaning of a song.  Last month, we did the Getty classic “The Power of the Cross.”  Our song of the month for May 2012 is “Your Great Name.”  You’ve probably heard this song on K-LOVE over the past year or so.  In preparation for introducing the  song I thought I would look at the scriptural background for the song.

Your Great Name (as made popular by Natalie Grant)

Verse 1

Lost are saved find their way (at the sound of Your great Name)

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)

All condemned feel no shame (at the sound of Your great Name)

Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”  (John 8:10-11)

Ev’ry fear has no place (at the sound of Your great Name)

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.  (1 John 4:18)

The enemy he has to leave (at the sound of Your great Name)

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  (James 4:7 ESV)

Jesus worthy is the Lamb that was slain for us

And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”  Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice,

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”  (Revelation 5:9-12 ESV)

The Son of God and man

But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”  (Matthew 26:63-64 ESV)

You are high and lifted up

Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted.  (Isaiah 52:13 ESV)

And all the world will praise Your great Name

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV)

Verse 2

All the weak find their strength (At the sound of Your great Name)

For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.  (2 Corinthians 12:10 ESV)

Hungry souls receive grace (At the sound of Your great Name)

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.  (Hebrews 4:16 ESV)

The fatherless find their rest (At the sound of Your great Name)

O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. (Psalm 10:17-18 ESV)

The sick are healed the dead are raised (At the sound of Your great Name)

And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.  (Matthew 11:4-5 ESV)
